Counter Hack - Book Review
By Ian Scott
So you want to learn more about computer security but don’t know where to start? Even though Ed Skoudis’ book, Counter Hack - A Step-by Step Guide to Computer Attacks and Effective Defences was published in 2002, this book should be on top of your reading list.
Even though it is a few years old, and some of the information is dated, it offers an indepth look at how systems are attacked, and what real measures you can put into place for prevention. One of the great benefits you’ll learn are the meanings of security terminology you’ll come across.
Skoudis has focussed on both *nix and Windows systems, lists numerous free tools you can use to test your own systems, and does it all in a fairly entertaining way for such a dry subject.
The book covers some TCP/IP basics that you’ll want to understand before getting into the nitty gritty - this is a good thing. Don’t skip this chapter if your TCP/IP knowledge is a bit fuzzy. And don’t worry - Skoudis doesn’t ask you to become a TCP/IP guru either.
If you’re serious about learning more about computer security, this will be a book that you will find worth its weight in gold.
